A second chance at life

National shortage spikes advocacy for organ donation

Nearly 12 years ago, Dr. Richard Darling was planning his own funeral. Ailing from liver cancer after a battle with Hepatitis C, he wasn’t eligible for a transplant and had no hope for survival. Darling and his wife decided to prepare for the dreaded future, pre-paying for funeral expenses.

That year, the federal government reversed its position on organ transplantation for liver cancer patients. The law saved Darling’s life. He was placed on a waiting list for a new liver and received a transplant. The transplanted organ failed, so Darling received a second liver.
