Common side-effects of hepatitis C protease inhibitors: clinical management advice published

The addition of the protease inhibitors telaprevir or boceprevir to hepatitis C treatment regimens increases the risk of anaemia, according to a review article published in Liver International. The author also found that telaprevir treatment was associated with an increased risk of rash and itching as well as some anorectal symptoms.

However, these side-effects were generally mild and could be managed without the need to discontinue therapy.

I'm in week 7 of Telapravir therapy after failing interferon therapy about 5 years ago. I've had a mild rash and had painful burning diarrhea for the first couple of weeks but side-effects have gotten much better lately. I cleared completely by my first test at 2 weeks and according to my nurse, almost everyone she's treating has had similar results but about 1/3rd have dropped out because they can't tolerate the side-effects. Just some anecdotal info.

I started Incivek combo 8/12/2011.
I had some analrectal discomfort and anemia but my main concern was my weight loss.
I went from 134 lbs at 5'11'' down to 113 lbs.
I cleared at 4 weeks and 12 weeks and from what I've read and heard it looks good for a SVR.

Whoooaahh...anal/rectal discomfort!
Compared to the alternative prognosis, bring it on!
I have had Interferon/Ribaviron therapy previously for 48 weeks, to no avail.
Would love to get rid of this insidious virus for ever.

Started treatment 1/5/2012 after doing the dual pegintron/ribavirin in 2001. After week 1 of teleprevir et al,, I had the rash over 50% and elevated esinophillia. Had to stop after 8 days. Oh well. Still an impressive drop in viral load. For those with the rash, grind up some oatmeal in a coffee grinder and add it to a warm (not hot bath). Ice packs are also good to alleviate the itch.
