UPMC organ transplant program placed on probation

The national agency that regulates organ transplant surgeries placed UPMC on probation on Tuesday because a male patient last spring received a kidney from his female companion and contracted hepatitis C.

Oversight by the United Network for Organ Sharing extends to all transplant programs at UPMC and means agency officials will be monitoring whether the hospital system continues to take steps to prevent similar incidents. UPMC's screening process now has seven steps where it had just two before.
