Hepatitis C and AZ prisons as well is common.21,000 infected and many more not knowing and are carriers.Prison is becoming the epicenter for the spread of HCV.1/4th of that community filters into our community every year. Spreading to 1 to 3 upon re-entry.Due to lack of early testing and treatment under the Dept. Of Corrections guidelines very few get treatment. They have a panel that does not consist of gastro doctors that decide. leading to almost always chronic life threatening HCV.Something has to be done. Most do not get treatment because in AZ they will not treat until they are stage 2.Early treatment 6 months from the infection with geno type testing and age play a big factor in treatment. But they wait and deny treatment. Many are also denied because of mental illness .Mental illness shouldnt be an excuse for lack of treatment. The mentally ill can be treated if watched closely This needs to be looked into because prison health is public health. And this is out of control.
